I have an apartment overlooking Darling Harbour in Sydney. Fireworks are a regular occurance, especially during the summer months, or of public holidays, but the biggest display is on New Years Eve when the show is massive and spectacular.
The fireworks are launched from big pontoons floating in the middle of the harbour, and are easily seen from my balcony,( and best enjoyed with a drink in one hand). Some idea of how close they seem can be seen in the photograph (this was taken off my balcony):
